Vion Retail Groenlo opts for automated cleaning
At Vion, an international meat processor, hygiene is a very important factor. Large quantities of standard trolleys are used daily at the production sites, which must be thoroughly cleaned after each use. Until recently, this was done with the help of an external cleaning service. However, the desire to work more efficiently, flexibly, and cost-effectively led Vion to an alternative solution: an industrial standard trolley washing machine, supplied by Havantec.
Vion is a leading player in the meat processing industry with multiple locations in the Netherlands. Havantec was already known within the organization from previous collaborations with other locations within Vion. When the need arose in Groenlo for a more efficient solution for cleaning standard trolleys, they quickly turned to Havantec.
“We also source our sinks and, in fact, all stainless steel products for the food industry from Havantec, so it was a logical step to go to them,” says Walter Overkamp, Technical Service Supervisor at Vion Retail Groenlo.
In this case study, Walter Overkamp and Cas Voets, Sales Manager Hygiene at Havantec, tell us more about the project involving the installation of a new industrial standard trolley washer at Vion Retail Groenlo B.V.

Manual cleaning: time-consuming and labor-intensive
Previously, the used standard trolleys were cleaned manually by an external cleaning team. This process was time-consuming and labor-intensive, and also ran the risk of inconsistent results.
“It was just a huge job,” says Walter. “The whole process took a lot of time and, in addition, the tubs had to wait a long time before they were clean again, which had an impact on production lead times.”
With the commissioning of the new washing machine, the cleaning process would become much more efficient and controlled. Automation ensures consistent results and makes the process less dependent on external factors.
The value of a showroom visit
The collaboration took place in several phases, involving multiple contacts. Initially, the request came from someone in production, after which Cas from Havantec took over the process. He supervised the process from start to finish: from advice to delivery and training.
Before proceeding with the purchase, Vion employees visited the Havantec showroom, where several machines are on display, allowing them to get a good idea of the quality and performance of the machines. The visit proved valuable: being able to physically inspect the machine and ask questions that were answered immediately increased the customer's confidence in the solution.
Ultimately, the choice fell on a NOMA Nowicki MWF-1E standard trolley washer for 200L standard trolleys, including a dosing system for cleaning agents.
The challenge: limited space
The need for an automated solution was clear, but the available space posed a challenge. The washing machine had to be integrated into an existing production environment, where space was limited and already largely furnished.
An external party was called in to produce a technical drawing that would determine the exact fit. Based on these drawings and a site visit, a solution was found that would allow the machine to fit optimally into the available space without compromising accessibility or safety.
“The draughtsman and Cas worked everything out neatly in advance. It fit perfectly and the installation ultimately went smoothly,” says Walter.

Delivery: well prepared and smooth process
After delivery, the machine was connected to the power supply by Vion's technical department. Cas then provided explanations, training, and instruction to the employees involved, so that the machine could be put into use immediately.
The installation went according to plan. The thorough preparation ensured that commissioning was quick and smooth.
“The machine is very easy and pleasant to use,” says the Vion operator. “Everything is very clear, well thought out, and easily accessible for carrying out work.”
The result: more control, lower costs, and greater flexibility
Thanks to the installation of the Nowicki MWF-1E standard trolley washer, cleaning the standard trolleys is now fully automated. The result is a more controlled, efficient process with less dependence on external cleaning services.
“We have become much more flexible in our production process,” says Walter. “We can now clean a tub immediately and use it again for another recipe. Previously, we had to wait until a cleaning team had time. Now we can switch much faster.”
In addition, the machine has contributed to cost savings and improved hygiene, which is essential in the food processing industry.
The collaboration between Havantec and Vion Groenlo
The collaboration between Vion Groenlo and Havantec went smoothly and professionally. Thanks to clear communication, fast delivery of documentation, and practical support, the project was completed successfully.
“What you want from a supplier is that they can quickly help you with drawings, documentation, and advice. And they did that very well,” concludes Walter.
